We support individuals with sensory and motor differences in developing a reliable way to communicate. Nonspeaking, Minimally Speaking, and Unreliably Speaking individuals have rich thoughts, ideas, and intelligence that are often misunderstood because traditional speech is not available to them. Through Spelling to Communicate (S2C), Nonspeakers are taught the purposeful motor skills that make spelling accessible, giving them the tools to express themselves, connect with others, and share their true voices.
My work goes beyond teaching letters on a board. It’s about building trust, fostering independence, and honoring each person’s unique strengths. Communication is a human right, and I am dedicated to ensuring my students are seen, heard, and valued for who they are.
"Katlyn Billue is a tremendous friend to the non speaking community. If you know a non-speaker she can unlock their voice. To describe her as caring, empathetic and knowledgeable would be an understatement. I was almost 15 when I first met her. I was at the end of my rope. When we met I honestly wasn't expecting much. Why would I? Why would she assume I was good and wise? The world assumed I was dumb, treated me like a baby, and thought my life was going nowhere. People don't presume non-speakers are competent. People don't assume non-speakers have anything to say. Really to reach any other conclusion is a waste of time. People really need to open their eyes to the opposite assumption. What a surprise when she looked at me and said, “Really nice to meet you Noah”. People it was on.
My life changed that day. I became human for the first time. I got to be a participant in the process of learning. I was seen as capable and given the opportunity to be me. Together we became a team. I learned to type with her steady, calm guidance. I accepted her help because she believed in me. I gave everything I had to the process and I became an open speller in months. Open with not only Katlyn, but also my mom.
If you are reading this you have found a friend. I’ll let you go make the call now. Go friend, your time to be heard awaits you. Be ready to be seen in the way you have always deserved. Mind in motion for the first time maybe. Enjoy it." -Noah
